Why forecast

Why cash flow forecasting matters for Sydney businesses

Profit doesn't pay the bills — cash does. For Sydney business owners, a forecast turns your numbers into foresight, so you can steer the business instead of reacting to whatever lands in the bank account. Here's what a good forecast gives you.

Diagram showing four reasons for cash flow forecasts: plan for the future, assess future performance, predict goal accomplishment and identify cash shortages
  • Plan for the futureSee what's ahead and make decisions on hiring, stock and investment with confidence.
  • Assess future performanceTest how your business will track over the coming weeks and months, not just where it's been.
  • Predict goal accomplishmentMap the cash you'll need to hit targets — and know if you're on course to get there.
  • Identify cash shortages earlySpot a squeeze weeks in advance so you can arrange finance or adjust before it bites.

Questions

Cash flow forecasting FAQs

What is cash flow forecasting?

Cash flow forecasting estimates the money moving in and out of your business over a set period, so you can predict your future bank balance, plan for shortfalls and make informed decisions rather than reacting to surprises.

What is a 13-week cash flow forecast?

A 13-week forecast gives a weekly view of expected cash in and out over the next quarter. It's the go-to tool for short-term planning because it's detailed enough to catch a squeeze early, yet far enough ahead to do something about it.

How is cash flow different from profit?

Profit is what's left after costs on paper; cash flow is the actual money in your account. A business can be profitable and still run out of cash — from slow-paying customers, stock, tax or loan repayments — which is exactly why forecasting matters.

How often should a forecast be updated?

At least monthly, and weekly for a 13-week model. A forecast is only useful if it reflects reality, so we compare actuals to the plan and re-forecast regularly as part of our service.

Do you use my existing accounting software?

Yes. We build forecasts on top of your live Xero data so they're always current. If your books need tidying first, our accounting team can help get you set up.

Do you offer cash flow forecasting for Sydney businesses?

Yes. Numerix Accounting is a Sydney-based firm working with businesses across Sydney and greater NSW. We can meet in person or work with you remotely, so you get local, hands-on support whether you're in the CBD, the Inner West or the wider metro area.
